Because less and less people are buying albums now that it has become so easy to download music for free online, Digipak's have become a necessary way to add value to the artist and make money again. The Digipak's are designed to 'add value' to the artist and to give buyer's more for their money.
They're an important aspect of representing the artist, who they are and the type of music they are trying to sell. Quite often, the design of the Digipak will have a similiar - if not the same - sort of style as the lead single on the album.
Other way musicians have tried to increase their profit:
Beats Headphones
Beats electronics were an audio product made by Dr Dre. He realised that the majority of modern day music listeners use iPods to listen to their music and that sometimes the quality of the song is reduced, or some effect are lost, when the song is played through low-quality earphones. He made the band Beats by Dre which came popular with their trademark 'B' on the side. Other artists such as Lady Gaga, Justin Bieber and PDiddy then followed.
Katy Perry's scented CD
To make her album more appealing, Katy Perry released her third album Teenage Dream with actual candy floss scented CD's to match the style of her single, California Girls.
