Dos & Don'ts of Covers and Adverts

Do:

  • Use clear font
  • Use appropriate sizes for images and fonts
  • Make sure your photos are in focus
  • Make sure your photos are an appropriate shape for the page
  • Use a layout that follows the rule of thirds for composition
  • Use an appropriate typeface that follows genre conventions and house style
  • Be careful where you place the front. It should follow genre conventions and be clear from a distance.
  • Follow the 3 colour rule for images, font and backgound
  • Think carefully about integrating font, text & language and image
  • Use appropriate industry logos and conventions, properly positioned
    • barcode
    • date
    • copyright
    • titles
    • artist name
Don't:
  • Stretch images
  • Use layer styles
  • Use unnecessary effects
  • Place text across artist face
  • Feel you need a seperate photo for every panel
