Vernalisis' Theory

Carole Vernallis studied the editing and camera work of music videos. She found that the editing in a music video is much more frequent than in film, that the cuts are usually to a rhythmic basis and that most stand out as disjuncture.

Her main observations were:
  • They don't follow the usual rules of 'continuity editing'.
  • Edits can often be very ovious to draw more attention to themselves.
For example, wipes and special effects such as slow motion.
  • Jump cuts are used often
  • Structure is usually made up of a master shot (base track)
  • The camera often moves in time with the music
Examples of this are:

We Are Young by Fun ft. Janelle Monae

This video uses obvious use of slow motion and a clear base track of the band performing on stage.

Rolling In The Deep by Adele

The base tracks used in this vary between her sitting in the chair, the dancer in the smoke, the glasses full of water and the broken china. The camera pans slowly but increases with the tempo with the music and the cuts between the shots are in time to the beat.
