Laura Mulvey

Laura Mulvey's theory involves the representation of Gender.

She quotes:

''In a world ordered by sexual imbalance, pleasure in looking has been split between active/male  and passive/female. The determining male gaze projects its fantasy onto the female figure which is styled accordingly''.

The above quote sums up the idea of dismembered women shown in music videos as opposed to men who are shown in full clothing. Mulvey argues that women themselves are held responsible as they tend to focus and obsess with specific parts of their body for e.g. their bum, legs or boobs. She also claims that women are 'styled accordingly' only for men's desires therefore we assume that the male audience outnumbers the female. This not only affects the way women think of themselves but women also view the video from a male perspective. Below are examples of music videos that involve 'dismembered women' but men in full clothing.

Wiley - Heatwave ft Ms.D

Dizzee Rascal - Holiday
