Structure of the record industry & record labels

The music industry today consists of 3 Conglomerates which are big record companies that own between 75%-80% of the music industry. They are the following:
  1. Vivendi- who own communication companies, video games and TV channels for e.g. Discovery Channel. The major record company under them is the Universal Music Group which is the largest of the big 3 since it bought EMI. They own little subsidiary record companies like Def Jam, GOOD Music, Roca-fella, Cash Money etc. Artists like Drake, Rihanna, Kanye West, Nicki Minaj and Amy Winehouse are signed to these subsidiary companies.
  2. Sony Corporation- who own Sony Motion Pictures, Hardware, Sony TV, Laptops and phones etc. The major record company under them is Sony Music that own subsidiary record companies like Epic and Columbia record companies. Artists like Beyonce, Usher, One Direction, Adele, Little Mix and Leona Lewis etc are signed to these subsidiary companies.
  3. Access Industries- who own UK TV Gold and lots of real estates. Their major record company is Warner who owns the subsidiary record companies such as Atlantic, Sire and Blacksmith Records etc. Artists like Madonna, Plan B, Cher, Cee Lo Green, Bruno Mars and Alesha Dixon etc are signed to these subsidiary companies.
