Laura Mulvey

Laura Mulvey looks at the representation of music videos. she quotes:

"In a mans world ordered by sexual imbalance, pleasure in looking has been split between active/male and passive/female. The determining male gaze projects its fantasy onto the female figure which is styled accordingly"

From this quote we can conclude that:
  • women are passive and men are active in music videos
  • women are styled accordingly, portrayed to suit the 'male gaze fantasy'
  • when talking about 'male gaze' it is that we presume the male audience/ man is doing the looking
This view of Mulvey could be seen as relevant in todays society, especially when it comes to genres such as hip hop, rap, grime.
Mulvey also says how women are disemembered, that is a focus not on a woman as a whole but parts of their body, while men are shown as a whole. She expresses this is the case in all forms of media.
Laura argues that this is because of the obsession that us women have with specific parts of our body. (E.g bum, legs, breasts etc)

This video is a perfect example of what Mulvey is talking about.
