Music Industry 2012

The music industry is mostly dominated by three man conglomerates (the big 3), Sony Coperation, Vivendi and Access Industries.
  • Sony CoperationAs well as owning Sony Motion Pictures, TVs and other electrical devices, Sony Coperation's main major record company is Sony Music Entertainment. (They also own subsidiary record companies such as Columbia, Epic, RCA, Nashville, Legacy and Syco).  Artists such as Beyonce, Mariah Carey, Celine Dion, Miles Davies, Aretha Franklin and Adele are all signed to Sony.
  • Vivendi
Vivendi also owns communication companies and sells tickets, but their major record company is Universal. (They also own - as of late - EMI, DefJam, Good Music, Rockafella, Cash Money and Activision). Artists they have signed are Kanye West, Jay Z, Lady Gaga, Florence and the Machine, Eminem.
  • Access Industries
As well as owning TV channels such as Gold and Discovery, Acess Industries own Warner Music (as well as subsidiary record companies such as Maverick, Atlantic, Sire and Fearless). They own artists such as Madonna, Cher, Bruno Mars, CeeLo Green and Paramore.
Because of modern day technology where it's no longer necessary to have to buy music (you can now download whole albums off of the internet for free) many artists, and therefore record labels, are drastically losing money. Because of this, record companies have created the idea of a 360 deal.

A 360 deal is an agreement between the artist and the record company; the company agrees to provide financical support for marketing, promotion and touring and the artist gives the company a percentage of all their income - including sales of record music and live performances.

This, as a result, means that even though it is now easy to obtain music with no expense - prices for other things such as merchandise and concert tickets have dramatically risen.
