Paul Willis and Audience
Paul Willis said ‘Pop Stars are to some extent, symbolic
vehicles which young women understand themselves more fully, even if by doing
so they partly shape their personalities to fit the stars alleged preferences’
This quote from Paul Willis is telling us that as the
audience we look toward our idols to find similarities between us and them. For
example if we experience a breakup and we hear the song ‘I will always love you’ by Whitney it
will give women the feeling of comfort in the idea that they are not the only person
who has experienced the pain and loss of love.
Audience for music videos are essential and very important.
The reason why audience is important is so the music video matches the song. If
we are watching a music video for instance in contemporary times we expect to
see the artist doing and wearing and talking about a particular thing.
Taylor Swift
– her audience is for young teenage girls up
till about 18.
The audience for a video and music of an artist like Taylor swift
would be someone who is young trendy, white of black ethnicity , be in college
or school, doesn’t shop because they are children, they read gossip girl, uses
buses for school they would have a blackberry smart phone or and I phone and their
favourite would be coke.
The video below shows the shots from the video that show you a typical loved up teenage girl who has been seen as invisible by the 'cool' boy. Paul Willis idea of women looking at the artist in this video would be Taylor as a symbolic vehicle, the young girls would see that she has been through this pain and is singing to them that in the end it will all be okay.
